Ugandan Artist Dax Vibez Slams UNMF Over Hotel Acquisition
Kampala, Uganda – Ugandan music artist Dax Vibez has publicly criticized the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) for its recent acquisition of a hotel, arguing that the funds could have been better utilized to support the nation's burgeoning music industry. Speaking on Galaxy TV, Vibez expressed his firm stance, stating, "I disagree with UNMF’s decision to buy a hotel; the funds could have supported artists’ venues or event spaces." He highlighted the pressing need for improved infrastructure and legal frameworks within the Ugandan music scene. Vibez elaborated on the challenges faced by artists, particularly concerning the current state of copyright laws. He revealed personal financial struggles, attributing them to the unamended copyright legislation, which he believes fails to adequately protect musicians' livelihoods. "I am broke because copyright was not amended," Vibez shared, emphasizing the detrimental impact on artists who rely on their creative work for income. He passionately advocated for the establishment of dedicated performance spaces, such as dancing halls, or comprehensive artist centers, where musicians could rehearse, perform, and collaborate. According to Vibez, such investments would provide tangible benefits to a wider array of artists, fostering growth and stability within the industry, rather than a single commercial venture like a hotel. His remarks have ignited a debate among stakeholders about the strategic priorities of the UNMF and the most effective ways to empower Ugandan talent.
