Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh shares best times to water your garden
The garden expert said that you should also avoid doing one thing and instead use your "common sense"
Gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh recently shared crucial advice on effective plant watering, emphasizing techniques to ensure optimal plant health. According to Titchmarsh, the most effective times to water plants are early in the morning or in the evening. This strategy minimizes water loss through evaporation, allowing the moisture to penetrate deeply into the soil and reach the plant roots more efficiently. "Don't just sprinkle the surface; get it down there," Titchmarsh advised, demonstrating how to direct water to the base of plants. He stressed that watering should not be dictated by a rigid calendar schedule. Instead, gardeners should rely on observation and touch to determine when their plants need hydration. "Use your common sense, not the clock," he stated. Titchmarsh recommended checking the soil by digging down a couple of inches. If the soil appears and feels damp, similar to a "freshly wrung out flannel," then the plants have sufficient water. He also noted that while plants should be encouraged to search for their own water supply, particularly in beds and borders, gardeners must act when plants show signs of wilting or stress. "That's the time to act. Ideally, obviously, before that," he concluded, reinforcing the importance of proactive care.
