Nairobi Floods: Illegal Construction Cripples Drainage System
Nairobi Drainage System Overwhelmed by Illegal Construction and Population Growth Nairobi, Kenya – Flooding in Nairobi is increasingly impacting residents, due to a combination of rapid population growth and illegal construction. Geoffrey Mosiria, Chief Officer for Environment for Nairobi City County, has addressed the issue in a recent video, calling for immediate action. "The drainage systems in Nairobi are simply too small for the current population," Mosiria stated. "Many floods are caused by people building on top of or blocking drainage channels." Mosiria highlighted the problem in several areas, including Parklands, where illegal structures have severely restricted water flow. He appealed to residents to take responsibility for keeping the drains near their properties clear, and to those who have built illegally, he urged them to remove their structures immediately. He also noted that the county government is working with the national government to develop a long-term plan to improve the drainage infrastructure. The county's commitment to collaboration and community engagement offers a hopeful outlook for resolving this critical issue and creating a more sustainable future for Nairobi's residents.
