Unlock Endless Strawberries: The Simple Guide to Runner Propagation

A recent online video by gardening enthusiast "ghettogardening" has captivated viewers with its practical and cost-effective method for propagating strawberry plants. Uploaded on July 24, 2025, the tutorial offers a straightforward approach to creating new plants from existing ones, potentially saving home gardeners significant expenses. The creator details the natural process where a "mother plant" extends "runners" that develop into "daughter plants." According to the video, allowing these daughter plants to root while still connected to the mother plant can divert essential energy, thereby decreasing the mother plant's fruit production. "Once it puts out these runners and these runners start to root, all of the energy from the mother plant then goes into that daughter plant," the gardener explains. The video demonstrates a simple technique: placing the runners into small pots filled with soil to encourage independent rooting. Once the daughter plant is firmly established with its own root system, it can be safely detached from the mother plant. The creator emphasizes the long-term benefits, stating, "You can literally just keep on cloning and propagating over and over again. You'll literally never run out of strawberries." The guide also advises against discarding older strawberry plants, noting that both June-bearing and ever-bearing varieties can remain productive for at least two years. This method provides an accessible way for individuals to maintain and expand their strawberry harvests sustainably.
