Harvard Commencement Overshadowed by Visa Revokes and Legal Battles
A federal judge’s temporary block of President Trump’s ban on international students has been met with a new challenge. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the U.S. will aggressively revoke visas from Chinese students with ties to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields. This impacts universities nationwide, particularly Harvard, whose commencement coincided with the court ruling. The Trump administration previously accused Harvard of failing to address anti-Semitic harassment and collaborating with the CCP. Harvard denies these claims. Former Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns, now a Harvard professor, stated, “Those who are a security risk should not have a visa, but that probably excludes the vast majority of the 277,000 Chinese students in the United States.” The legal battle continues, with billions of dollars in federal funds frozen, highlighting the complexities of national security concerns and academic freedom.
