Deadly Floods and Bridge Collapse Devastate Philippines
Heavy Rains Cause Death and Destruction in the Philippines The Philippines is grappling with the aftermath of severe storms that have caused widespread flooding and devastation. In Cotabato, a 60-year-old man lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross the Tuwaan River. His 30-year-old son, who was with him, survived. "Kasama niya 'yung anak niya na tumawid tapos naabutan ng ulo ng baha, so naanod silang dalawa, mga 100 meters," explained Engr. Jeanne Pulmones, Head MDRRMO Alamada. "Sadly, yung tatay, nakabitiw doon sa anak kaya naanod yung tatay; yung anak, naka-survive." The incident underscores the dangers of venturing into floodwaters. Further south, in Davao Occidental, a bridge in Don Marcelino collapsed under the pressure of the raging river. The swift currents, fueled by heavy rainfall, also caused significant flooding in Maguindanao del Sur, affecting more than 50,000 families. One resident described the situation as "kasiyahan" (celebration) referring to the fact that people were swimming in the flooded streets. Relief efforts are underway, with the Bangsamoro government and the Ministry of Social Services and Development distributing food, hygiene kits, and other necessities to those affected. The government's quick response team is working to help those in need.
