Duterte's Mayoral Victory: Can He Take Oath From The Hague?
The Philippines is buzzing with news regarding former President Rodrigo Duterte's recent win in the Davao City mayoral race. However, Duterte's current situation adds a layer of complexity. He is currently under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. This has raised questions about how he will assume office. According to Interior Secretary Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr., the government recognizes Duterte's victory. In a statement, Abalos stated, "We recognize the victory of former President Duterte." However, the issue of Duterte's physical presence in Davao City remains a hurdle. Philippine law mandates the physical presence of the mayor to assume office. To address this, the government is working with the ICC to arrange a special procedure that would allow Duterte to take his oath of office in the presence of a Philippine consul in The Hague. Secretary Abalos clarified, "If, for some reason, he is unable to be physically present, then the vice mayor will take over."
