Philippines Launches 'Bayanihan Sim': 1 Million Free SIM Cards for Underserved Areas
The Philippine government is taking steps to bridge the digital divide. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced the "Bayanihan Sim" project, a three-year plan to distribute one million SIM cards with 25GB of data to underserved areas. The initiative focuses on students and teachers in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs). DICT Usec. Paul Mercado stated during a press briefing, "The purpose of this project is to increase digital infrastructure, particularly cell towers, in these underserved areas." This initiative is aimed at improving access to education and opportunities in remote regions. The SIM cards, which will be provided free of charge, represent a significant investment in digital inclusion.
