Thousands Affected as Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Flooding in Philippines
Widespread Flooding in the Philippines Affects Thousands Heavy rains across the Philippines have caused widespread flooding, impacting thousands of people. The state weather bureau, PAGASA, attributes the flooding to a low-pressure area intensified by the southwest monsoon, known locally as Habagat. The flooding is particularly severe in several regions, including Davao de Oro and Bulacan. In Maco, Davao de Oro, residents reported rapidly rising floodwaters carrying mud and debris. "The floodwaters rose so quickly," said one resident, "we barely had time to save our belongings." Footage shows submerged roads and homes. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reports thousands are affected, with over 20,000 in Bulacan alone needing assistance. Asec. Irene Dumlao, spokesperson for DSWD, stated that families affected by the Habagat received family food packs and other non-food items. The value of aid distributed exceeds ₱549,000, and this amount is expected to increase as the situation continues. In Ilocos Norte, a pick-up truck crashed into a tree due to the wet road conditions. Three people sustained injuries but received prompt medical attention. The DSWD is coordinating with local government units to provide ongoing aid to those affected by the severe weather.
