Meralco Announces Lower Electricity Bills for June in the Philippines
Meralco to Lower Electricity Bills in the Philippines this June MANILA, Philippines – Meralco, the Philippines' largest electricity distributor, announced a reduction in electricity bills for its customers this June. The decrease amounts to 0.11 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per kilowatt-hour for consumers using 200 kWh monthly. This translates to a savings of around ₱22 for the average consumer. This reduction is attributed to lower generation charges, according to Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco's VP and Head for Corp. Comms. "The lower generation charge is the main reason for the reduction this month," Zaldarriaga stated during an interview with GMA Integrated News. However, Meralco also cautioned that the rainy season may lead to higher prices. Lawrence Fernandez, VP and Head of Utility Economics, Meralco, explained, "Because they were not allowed to go on maintenance during the summer months. This will tend to push prices up." This is due to the increased likelihood of power outages and damage to power lines during storms, requiring costly repairs and maintenance. Despite the potential for future price increases, the immediate reduction in electricity bills provides welcome relief for many Filipino households already struggling with rising costs of living. The reduction, even if temporary, offers a glimmer of hope during these challenging economic times.
