GOLD COAST, Australia – A local freediver, known as goldcoastfreediver, recently captured extraordinary underwater footage of a critically endangered Shark Ray (Rhina ancylostmus) at Kirra Reef. The rare sighting, which the diver described as an experience he "cannot believe I got this shot," has ignited calls for increased marine protection in the area. The video, uploaded on July 24, 2025, showcases the majestic creature, estimated to be over two meters in length, gracefully navigating the sandy seabed amidst a school of smaller fish. The Shark Ray, also known as a Bowmouth Guitarfish, is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). "I've never in my life seen this beautiful creature," the freediver stated in his video, emphasizing the profound impact of the encounter. "It's possible I may never see one of them again." He further added, "This is another reason why Kirra Reef should be a marine sanctuary," advocating for the area's designation as a protected zone to safeguard vulnerable marine life. Conservationists have long highlighted the importance of protecting critical habitats for endangered species. This unique footage serves as a powerful reminder of the rich biodiversity present in Australian waters and the urgent need for ongoing conservation efforts.
