UN Ocean Conference Concludes: Urgent Calls for Action to Halt Ocean Depletion
NICE, FRANCE – As the UN Ocean Conference 2025 concludes in Nice, France, environmental organizations like Greenpeace are intensifying their calls for immediate and concrete action from world leaders to safeguard the planet's oceans. Despite commitments made during the conference, concerns linger about the pace and effectiveness of implementation. An advocate from Greenpeace Africa highlighted the dire situation, particularly in West Africa. "Our ocean is getting empty, and this is not only a threat to our food security, but it's a threat to also our national security," stated the representative, emphasizing the severe consequences of continued ocean degradation and overfishing. The video showcased distressing visuals of marine pollution, including oil spills and beaches laden with waste, alongside images of large-scale fishing operations that contribute to the depletion of marine life. Greenpeace urges leaders to move beyond mere commitments and take decisive steps, such as ratifying the High Seas Treaty and implementing a moratorium on deep-sea mining, to reverse the alarming trend of ocean decline.
