Argentinian Immigrant Reveals Realities of Adapting to Life in Galicia, Spain
An Argentinian immigrant, Grisel Aguilar Ferreiro, known as Grichu, has shared her candid experience of adapting to life in Galicia, Spain, highlighting both the challenges and the deep affection she has developed for the region. In a recent video, Grichu responded to a viewer's query about the difficulties of settling in Galicia. She outlined three primary obstacles she encountered. Firstly, the climate proved to be a significant adjustment. "Galicia, while super green, that green comes at a price," she explained, referring to the frequent rain and grey days that can emotionally impact newcomers, especially those without established social networks. She noted that the summer months, with their long days, beautiful beaches, and coastal towns, significantly compensate for the harsher periods. Secondly, Grichu discussed the nature of the local Galician people. While describing them as "super hospitable and kind" once their trust is earned, she found them initially reserved. "Reaching that point is quite complicated; they tend to be very closed off," she stated, adding that most of her current friends are fellow Latin Americans with whom she shares cultural and historical connections. However, she praised the Galicians for their strong work ethic, noting that for an immigrant, finding work is generally not an issue if one is honest, responsible, and hardworking. Finally, the public transportation system was cited as a major hurdle. Grichu described it as "really terrible," emphasizing that without a car, moving around is very difficult. She contrasted this with cities like Madrid or Barcelona, where extensive metro systems allow easy movement, making the transition to Galicia a "shock." Despite these challenges, Grichu expressed an unwavering love for Galicia. "I wouldn't change Galicia for anything," she affirmed, describing the region as having "magic, history, sea, greenery, and incredible people." She concluded by inviting others to experience Galicia with an open heart, promising that "Galicia embraces you."
