Pulmonologist Warns Against Vaping Risks, Citing Increased Pneumonia in Young Users LUCENA, Spain – A leading pulmonology specialist from the Hospital Centro de Andalucía has issued a stark warning regarding the health implications of vaping, challenging the common perception that it is a safer alternative to traditional smoking. Dr. José Manuel Gallardo, a specialist in Pulmonology, explained that while vaping does not involve the combustion found in tobacco, it presents its own unique dangers to respiratory health. "In general, there is a belief that vaping is not harmful, or not as harmful as tobacco," Dr. Gallardo stated in a recent public address. He elaborated on the fundamental difference: "When we smoke, what we generate is an inflammation of the bronchus due to organic combustion of tobacco, and that generates inflammation in the respiratory tract." However, Dr. Gallardo clarified that vaping, despite lacking combustion, causes a different problem. "Vaping does not have combustion and does not generate that inflammation of the respiratory tract, but it produces a problem, and that is that it alters the humidity of the respiratory tract." This alteration, he explained, makes the respiratory system "more prone to infections." He further emphasized the severity of these potential infections. "The fundamental problem that vaping can generate is that, by altering that humidity of the respiratory tract, infections are generated, and many times these infections can become severe pneumonias." Dr. Gallardo cited studies from the United States, noting, "When studies on vaping began in the United States, it was shown that young people had a much higher rate of pneumonia production than the normal population of their age." He added, "And these pneumonias could often become severe pneumonias requiring hospital admission." In conclusion, Dr. Gallardo advised, "Therefore, recommendable: do not smoke tobacco or vape. Avoid anything that alters the bronchial mucosa." His message underscores the importance of avoiding all forms of inhaled substances to maintain optimal lung health.
