London, UK – Clinical Canine Behaviourist Will Atherton, known for his work with rescue dogs, has sparked a debate among pet owners by declaring Labradors as 'the best dog breed on the planet' for first-time owners. Atherton, who holds an MSc in canine behaviour, asserts that choosing a Labrador as a first pet could drastically reduce the number of dogs in shelters. "If everyone got a Labrador for their first breed, there would be 50%+ less dogs in shelters," Atherton stated in a recent video. He explained that many issues leading to dogs being surrendered stem from owners being 'woefully under prepared' for certain breeds. According to Atherton, Labradors are 'amazing with people, hyper intelligent, amazing with other dogs,' and possess a natural calm, relaxed, and stable temperament with 'no form of aggression whatsoever.' He further highlighted their 'huge desire to please their owners' and an 'incredible food and toy drive,' which makes them 'super easy to train.' Atherton believes these traits combine to make Labradors 'the complete package to build the perfect family pet.' He encourages new owners to gain experience with Labradors before considering other breeds, reinforcing his mission to keep dogs out of shelters and off euthanasia lists. The claims have generated significant discussion online, with many dog owners sharing their experiences with Labradors and other breeds.
