Podgorica's Controversial Parking Lot: A Clash of Visions
Podgorica's Temporary Parking Lot Sparks Political Debate Podgorica, Montenegro – The recent decision by the Podgorica city government to transform the site of the former Moraca barracks into a temporary parking lot has ignited a heated political debate. The move, announced on May 25th, 2025, aims to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the city center. However, the opposition has strongly criticized the decision, arguing that it undermines long-term urban planning initiatives. "This is a short-sighted solution that ignores the carefully developed plans for this area," stated Stefan Culafic of the DPS opposition party in a recent interview. He pointed out that millions of euros were allocated for a central park and cultural facilities, plans now seemingly sidelined by the temporary parking lot. Mayor Sasa Mujovic, however, defended the decision, stating, "We don't have the luxury of leaving this space unused. It's a temporary measure to address the immediate problem of parking shortages." He emphasized the urgent need to find a solution for traffic congestion, adding that the temporary parking lot would be free until June 2nd, after which it will cost €0.40 per hour. The controversy highlights the clash between short-term needs and long-term urban vision in Podgorica. The debate continues as the city grapples with its infrastructural challenges and political divisions.
