Spain Fights Back Against West Nile Virus: Fumigation and Public Health Measures in Action
West Nile Virus Prevention: Spain Launches Fumigation Campaign Spain is taking proactive steps to combat the West Nile virus, which claimed 20 lives last year. Fumigation efforts have begun in areas with high mosquito populations, particularly along riverbanks. The annual prevention plan, in effect until March 2026, involves regular spraying and mosquito sample analysis. Rafael Sánchez, from Control Medioambiental, explained, "The plan obliges us to annual treatments until March of next year." Meanwhile, scientists at the CSIC are diligently analyzing collected mosquitoes to identify virus carriers. Álvaro Solis, a CSIC technician, stated, "We separate the species that transmit the West Nile virus." In addition to the fumigation, public health officials urge citizens to use authorized repellents, especially during dawn and dusk, and to dispose of stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding. This comprehensive approach aims to prevent a repeat of last year's tragic toll.
