Durban's Abandoned Military Base: A Home for the Homeless
Merebank's Abandoned SANDF Base: A Haven for the Homeless In Merebank, Durban, South Africa, a once fully operational South African National Defence Force (SANDF) base now serves as a shelter for homeless individuals from the Lamontville area. This situation has raised concerns amongst community members and highlights the deepening social issues plaguing the region. IOL journalist Mthobisi Nozulela's recent investigation revealed the extent of the problem. Despite official statements claiming the site had been cleared, Nozulela found numerous dilapidated and abandoned military trucks scattered across the overgrown grounds. These trucks now serve as makeshift homes for the homeless, who have established makeshift living spaces amongst the rusting vehicles and overgrown vegetation. "Despite claims that the site had since been cleared, I found broken down, damaged and aged trucks and overgrown grass between spots used for sleeping by those who have since taken refuge at the site." Nozulela stated in his report. The presence of the homeless at this location has also led to concerns about increased crime in the area. Community members have expressed their worry about the safety and security implications of this situation. The contrast between the base's former military purpose and its current state as a haven for the homeless serves as a stark reminder of the broader challenges faced by South Africa in addressing poverty and homelessness. The incident underscores the need for more effective strategies to tackle the issue and provide adequate shelter and support for vulnerable populations.
