Deadly Snowstorms and Severe Weather Cripple South Africa
Heavy snowstorms and severe weather have caused significant disruption across South Africa. The N2 highway, a major route, has been closed in sections near Kokstad and Pietermaritzburg due to heavy snowfall, according to the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Sipho Hlomuka. This closure has caused significant traffic congestion and disruption for travelers. Tragically, five people lost their lives in a car accident on the N2 outside East London. Authorities reported that the driver lost control of their vehicle while attempting to avoid a falling tree. "The conditions were extremely hazardous," said a spokesperson for the emergency services. The South African Weather Service issued warnings about the severe weather, including heavy snowfall, severe thunderstorms, and gale-force winds. The weather service urges caution and advises people to stay indoors where possible. The clean-up efforts are underway, and authorities are working to reopen the affected roads as soon as it is safe to do so.
