Madrid, Spain – A recent video by meteorologist Isabel Moreno sheds light on the concerning reality of sea level rise, asserting that a significant increase is now irreversible, regardless of immediate climate actions. Moreno, a physicist by profession, explained from a beach setting that the phenomenon is driven by two primary factors. According to Moreno, the first contributor is the ongoing melting of ice on land, specifically referencing glaciers, Greenland, and Antarctica. The second, and perhaps less commonly understood, factor is the thermal expansion of ocean water. Moreno highlighted that over 90% of the energy driving climate change is absorbed by the oceans. This absorption leads to a rise in ocean temperature, causing the water to expand. She noted that this heat is predominantly stored in the first 700 meters of the ocean. While acknowledging that the process of warming and expansion in deeper ocean layers will take an extended period, potentially centuries, Moreno stressed that this 'thermal inertia' means sea levels will continue to rise. She clarified that this understanding should not lead to complacency but rather underscore the urgent need for both mitigation efforts to prevent the worst-case scenarios and adaptation strategies to cope with the unavoidable changes. "We cannot return to the previous climate situation on our scale," Moreno stated, emphasizing the critical importance of proactive measures.
