Thailand's Cannabis Crackdown After UK Smuggling Arrests
Thailand Cracks Down on Cannabis After UK Tourists Arrested for Smuggling Thailand's government has announced a crackdown on cannabis sales following the arrest of two British women on drug smuggling charges. The move comes after an 18-year-old woman from Teesside, UK, was detained in Georgia last week with nearly 50 kilograms of cannabis in her suitcase. Separately, another British woman was also arrested. These incidents highlight a concerning trend: a 57% increase in Brits arrested abroad on drug charges over the past year, with 62% being women and 65% under 34. Christopher Stacey, Chief Executive of Prisoners Abroad, comments on the harsh conditions in Thai prisons, describing them as "incredibly hot" and often "infested with mosquitoes." The authorities are tightening regulations to address the issue. The arrests serve as a stark warning to travelers about the severe consequences of drug smuggling.
