Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling: Thrills, Spills, and Bruises Abound
The annual Gloucestershire cheese rolling race, held on May 26th, 2025, once again proved to be a thrilling yet hazardous event. Dozens of competitors, some in costume, raced down the steep, grassy hill in pursuit of a rolling Double Gloucester cheese. The race, known for its unpredictable nature and resulting injuries, saw many participants tumbling and sustaining scrapes and bruises. Tom Kopke, this year's men's downhill winner, spoke about the experience: "Last year the hill was muddy and safe, but this year, as you can see, it was dry and dangerous, and people got injured." His words highlight the inherent risks involved. Despite the bumps and scrapes, the event's unique blend of tradition and exhilarating chaos continues to draw crowds and competitors year after year, making it a memorable spectacle.
