Gaza Doctor's Urgent Plea: Malnutrition a Catastrophe for Children
Gaza Crisis: Malnutrition Cripples Children's Immune Systems, Doctor Warns Gaza City, Palestine – A British doctor returning from Gaza has issued a stark warning about the devastating impact of malnutrition on children in the war-torn region. The doctor, who wishes to remain anonymous, described the situation as "heartbreaking," with malnutrition significantly impacting the health and well-being of young children. "Malnutrition is the biggest problem at the moment that we have in Gaza, and it's hitting the children more than anyone else." she stated. The doctor detailed how malnutrition weakens children's immune systems, making them vulnerable to infections. She shared instances where children appeared much younger than their actual age due to chronic malnutrition. The lack of essential vitamins and nutrients prevents adequate cell turnover, resulting in slower healing from injuries. Compounding the issue are the dire living conditions in Gaza. Many families have been displaced multiple times, living in unsanitary tents with limited access to clean water. The doctor expressed concern over the lack of medical supplies, particularly antibiotics, needed to combat the infections that easily spread in these conditions. She described having only three choices of antibiotics available, none of which were ideal for the types of open wounds she encountered. Despite the grim realities, the doctor remains committed to providing care. Her experiences highlight the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid and improved medical resources in Gaza to help children recover and thrive.
