Former child star Jake Lloyd, best known for his role as young Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace," has faced significant personal challenges since his early acting career. After achieving global fame at a young age, Lloyd reportedly endured severe bullying from schoolmates due to his role and the mixed reception of the film. This, combined with the demanding schedule of interviews and travel, led him to retire from acting at 12. In his adolescence, Lloyd began exhibiting symptoms of mental illness, initially misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder, before receiving a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. His mother reported that he experienced delusions, including believing people with black eyes were following him and having conversations with television personalities. This led to a period of depression, denial of his illness (anosognosia), and a substitution of prescribed medication with illegal drugs, reportedly resulting in aggressive behavior towards his mother. Lloyd has had multiple encounters with law enforcement, including a high-speed police chase without a driver's license, which led to his incarceration when no beds were available in psychiatric hospitals. Following the death of his sister at 26, a significant pillar in his life, Lloyd's mental state further deteriorated, leading to another arrest after he stopped his car in the middle of a highway and spoke incoherently to officers. He has since been admitted to a psychiatric hospital, where he has been for a year, and is reportedly showing improvement. Despite his tumultuous journey, his mother confirms he remains a devoted fan of the Star Wars franchise.
