WARSAW, Poland – The competitive nature of Warsaw's rental market has come under scrutiny following a recent online video detailing a couple's arduous apartment search. The video, posted by popular social media personality Jeleniewska, highlights the increasingly common and often frustrating process tenants face, including what she described as a "casting" for an apartment.Jeleniewska and her partner are in a race against time, needing to vacate their current residence in three weeks as their landlord plans to move back in. Their search led them through a series of properties, each with its own set of challenges. The first apartment they viewed was described as nearly new, with the previous owner residing there for only three months. While aesthetically pleasing, Jeleniewska noted, "The amount of dark red didn't appeal to me." Despite its modern amenities, including a walk-through wardrobe leading to a separate bathroom, the color scheme and small windows ultimately deterred them.Their second viewing presented a stark contrast: an entirely unfinished apartment, described as "to be furnished." Jeleniewska expressed surprise at the extent of work required, stating, "We didn't expect it to be so basic." The property, while offering four rooms and two bathrooms, demanded significant time and effort for furnishing and finishing, which the couple felt they lacked. "We don't have the time or energy to deal with that right now," she remarked. The third apartment initially seemed to be the perfect fit. It boasted an open-plan living room and kitchen, abundant natural light, and generous space. Jeleniewska was particularly impressed, noting, "This open living room with a kitchen won me over. Lots of daylight, which is important to us, and huge space." However, their hopes were dashed when, two weeks after expressing their intent to take the apartment, they received news that they had "lost the casting." The couple firmly stated they would not engage in a bidding war to pay "several thousand monthly."The video has resonated with many, drawing comments from viewers who shared similar experiences, including one user who stated, "I went through a casting to rent a room XD." The incident sheds light on the pressures faced by renters in a tight market, where even suitable properties can be snatched away through competitive processes, pushing prices upwards. As Jeleniewska concluded, "We've already seen over a dozen apartments, and now it's the last week, and we still don't have one."
