Mexico City, Mexico – Martí Batres, in an interview on TV UNAM, shed light on the recent nationalization efforts concerning hospitals belonging to the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE). Batres explained that for decades, several ISSSTE hospitals operated under a public-private partnership model, where private companies were responsible for their construction and administration. These companies received substantial rental payments from the ISSSTE for periods ranging from 20 to 30 years. According to Batres, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration embarked on a strategy to nationalize these facilities. "We have already nationalized four hospitals: one in Villahermosa, Tabasco; another in Mérida, Yucatán; and one in Tepic, Nayarit. We are currently working on the one in Tláhuac, Mexico City," Batres stated. He emphasized that this move was a more economically sound decision for the government. "While it involved a significant upfront investment, it was ultimately more economical than continuously paying rent for 20 to 30 years, which made the hospitals cost several times their real value," he concluded. The nationalization aims to bring these essential healthcare facilities fully under public control.
