Ghana on Brink of Power Crisis: Expert Sounds Alarm
Ghana Faces Looming Power Crisis: Expert Urges Urgent Action Ghana is on the brink of a major power crisis, according to Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute of Energy Security (IES). Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show, Amoasi VII highlighted critical inefficiencies and financial problems within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the nation's main power distributor. He pointed to the ECG's revenue collection struggles, noting that in some months, they collect less than half of their projected revenue. This financial instability directly impacts their ability to maintain and upgrade infrastructure, leading to potential widespread power outages. "The ECG is unable to collect even 50% of the expected revenue in some months," Amoasi VII explained, emphasizing the severity of the situation. He stressed the importance of addressing the ECG's operational challenges to avoid a major disruption to the country's power supply. He proposed private sector involvement as a potential solution to improve the financial health and efficiency of the ECG, ensuring a more reliable and stable power supply for Ghanaian citizens. The government is currently under pressure to find solutions to this looming crisis, and the IES's recommendations are likely to influence policy decisions in the coming weeks.
