Ghana Ditches Toll Booths for Digital System: 1 Cedi Charge via Ghana Card
Ghana Unveils Digital Road Toll System: President Mahama Announces End to Toll Booths at CEO Summit Accra, Ghana – President John Mahama announced a groundbreaking new road toll system at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit held in Accra on May 26, 2025. This innovative system eliminates the need for traditional toll booths, replacing them with a fully digital process linked to citizens' Ghana Cards. "Every car is linked to the owner’s Ghana Card, so we don’t need the old toll booths anymore," President Mahama stated. "If you cross the East Legon bridge, we simply take a picture of your car, and the system will automatically send the toll charge to your mobile money or bank account. You’ll just pay 1 cedi." The system promises increased efficiency and reduced congestion at toll points. The 1 cedi charge applies to crossings such as the East Legon bridge. The initiative aligns with Ghana's ongoing digitalization efforts and aims to modernize its infrastructure. The summit provided a fitting platform for this announcement, showcasing the government's commitment to technological advancements in governance.
