Ghana Offers Free Surgeries, Restoring Dignity and Hope to Women
Ghana Launches Free Obstetric Fistula Surgeries: Hope for Thousands Free surgeries to treat obstetric fistula are underway across five regions of Ghana, thanks to a partnership between the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Ministry of Health, and several local hospitals. Obstetric fistula, a devastating childbirth injury, leaves women with incontinence and social stigma. One patient, interviewed in the video, described the years of shame and isolation she endured before receiving the life-changing surgery. "I cannot explain the pain," she stated, expressing immense gratitude for the free medical care. Dr. Wilfred Osah, UNFPA representative, emphasized the initiative's goal of taking the conversation beyond conference rooms and into communities to reach those most affected. By 2030, the program aims to eliminate obstetric fistula in Ghana, restoring dignity and hope to countless women.
