Ghana's Green Initiative: Millions of Trees to Be Planted Nationwide
Ghana Launches Nationwide Tree Planting Initiative: 'One Tree Per Child' Aims for Millions of Trees by 2030 ACCRA, GHANA – In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, President John Mahama today launched the "One Tree Per Child" initiative. This ambitious program aims to plant tens of millions of trees across Ghana by 2030, marking a substantial effort to combat deforestation and promote environmental responsibility. The initiative will engage every school-aged child in the country, providing each with a seedling appropriate to their local ecology. Teachers, environmental officers, forestry officials, and traditional leaders will guide students in nurturing their trees. President Mahama emphasized the long-term benefits, stating, "These are trees that will stabilize our soils, cool our cities, and absorb carbon dioxide, restoring our degraded ecosystems." Beyond environmental benefits, the program also aims to instill a sense of civic pride and responsibility in young Ghanaians. The initiative builds upon the foundation of the existing 'Trees for Life' afforestation program, expanding its reach and impact nationwide. The government's target is to plant 30 million trees across the country by June 30th, 2025. This initiative represents a significant step forward in Ghana's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.
