Ghana's Clean-Up Crew: Tackling Choked Drains, One Gutter at a Time
Ghana Tackles Choked Drains: A Collaborative Clean-Up Effort Accra, Ghana – In a concerted effort to combat the widespread issue of blocked public drains, DPS Pipes Ghana recently partnered with a local group called the Buz Stop Boys. Over 70% of public drains in the national capital are either choked or partially blocked, posing a significant risk of flooding and disease outbreaks, according to the Environmental Health Department. The collaboration resulted in a large-scale cleanup exercise, removing substantial amounts of debris and waste from the drainage systems. The initiative is not just about immediate cleaning, but also about fostering a long-term change in community attitudes towards waste management. "Building strong communities is just as important as building strong pipes," stated Bright Artah, Marketing Officer at DPS Pipes Ghana, emphasizing the company's commitment to community development. Kwajo Safo, team leader of the Buz Stop Boys, echoed this sentiment, calling on Ghanaians to assist in maintaining the cleanliness achieved through a change of mindset. Evelyn Obuobrian Panson, Assemblywoman for the Zodiac Akotoku Electoral Area, commended the groups' work and assured continued community engagement. The cleanup exercise serves as a powerful symbol of collaboration between the private sector and community groups in addressing a critical urban challenge. The success of this initiative highlights the potential for positive change when different stakeholders work together to improve public health and infrastructure.
