A recent online video featuring labor lawyer Juanma Lorente has shed light on several illegal practices employers sometimes use as sanctions against their employees in Spain. Lorente, known as 'JuanmaLorente_Laboralista' on social media, detailed three specific actions that violate labor laws, emphasizing that workers have rights against such measures. According to Lorente, one common but prohibited sanction is the deduction of money from an employee's salary due to errors or mistakes made at work. 'If they sanction you, they have to sanction you with employment and with salary,' Lorente stated, clarifying that employers cannot simply reduce pay. He advised employees who have experienced this to reclaim the deducted money. Another illegal practice highlighted is the reduction of an employee's annual leave. Lorente firmly asserted, 'You have thirty natural days of vacation per year, and no matter how much you mess up at work, you cannot have fewer vacations.' He stressed that this action is 'totally illegal.' Finally, the lawyer addressed the issue of employers forcing staff to work beyond their contracted hours to correct mistakes without additional compensation. 'Your hours are your hours,' Lorente explained, adding that if an employee is contracted for a specific number of hours, they cannot be compelled to work extra time to fix errors. He encouraged employees facing this situation to leave work at their scheduled time. The video serves as an important reminder for workers to be aware of their labor rights and to challenge illegal sanctions imposed by their employers.
