Romanian Fruit Prices Soar: Cherries Reach 40 Lei Per Kilogram
BUCHAREST, Romania – June 18, 2025 – Consumers in Romania are facing significantly higher prices for fresh fruits this summer, with reports indicating a nearly 20% increase compared to last year. Cherries, a seasonal favorite, are particularly affected, with prices reaching up to 40 lei per kilogram in some markets.According to a recent market analysis, fresh fruits have seen an average price hike of 18.88% since May 2024. Fruit preserves and citrus fruits have also experienced substantial increases, at 17.80% and 17.34% respectively.A reporter from Stirile ProTV observed that while the average price for cherries is around 35 lei per kilogram, some vendors are selling them for even more. However, some sellers are making compromises on quality to offer slightly lower prices, around 15 lei per kilogram, to avoid being left with unsold produce. One vendor attributed the high prices and scarcity to recent hail damage, which significantly impacted crops, leading to reduced supply and increased costs for consumers. This situation highlights the challenges faced by both consumers and vendors in the current economic climate, as fresh produce becomes increasingly expensive.
