An Italian’s guide to Italy's under-the-radar region that tourists often skip
Veneto has so much more to offer than Venice and Verona.
Chioggia, Italy – A lesser-known Italian town, Chioggia, is gaining attention as a potential alternative for travelers seeking the charm of Venice without the accompanying crowds and high prices. Located approximately an hour by boat from Venice, Chioggia offers a unique blend of historical canals and a modern beach strip. Travel vlogger Katia, known as 'katdambo,' recently showcased the town, highlighting its appeal. "Apparently, when Italians want to go to Venice but they don't want the Venice prices or the crowds, they come here instead," she noted in her video. The town's old quarter features picturesque canals and traditional architecture, while a newer area provides beach access and a more contemporary atmosphere. Chioggia is also celebrated for its culinary heritage, particularly as the birthplace of the spritz. Katia enthusiastically reported, "I had quite possibly the best spritz of my life here." With spritzes available for as little as €2.50, the town presents an attractive option for budget-conscious visitors. While acknowledging that Chioggia may not fully replicate Venice's distinct "Gothic vibes," it offers a practical and charming base for those looking to explore the Venetian region economically.
