Subtle but Harmful: How Microaggressions Poison the Workplace
Microaggressions in the Workplace: A Leadership Coach's Perspective Unseen yet pervasive, microaggressions in the workplace are a growing concern. Leadership coach Kate, based in Spain, recently highlighted the issue in a short video. She points to subtle, often unintentional, acts of discrimination that can create a hostile work environment. One example cited was a senior leader calling a female colleague "girl" in the kitchen. Kate notes that such seemingly minor incidents can significantly impact employee morale and productivity. "People who look a certain way get talked over in meetings all the time," Kate explains, illustrating how microaggressions can manifest. She also mentions a "banter incident involving a sombrero," showcasing the varied forms these behaviors can take. While acknowledging that some senior teams might be "a bit old school," Kate emphasizes the importance of addressing these issues for a more inclusive workplace. Her Leadership Accelerator Premium program, starting July 1st, aims to equip leaders with the skills to foster such environments. The program is designed to help leaders create more inclusive and respectful workplaces.
