Madrid, Spain – A recent online video by labor lawyer 'Un Tío Legal' has shed light on the intricate rules governing travel for individuals receiving unemployment benefits (paro) in Spain. The legal expert, known for his practical advice, outlined four distinct scenarios that determine how international travel impacts unemployment payments. According to the lawyer, trips lasting less than 15 days generally do not affect the benefit, provided SEPE is notified and the individual remains actively seeking employment. For longer stays, between 15 and 90 days, the benefit is suspended, requiring prior notification and authorization from SEPE. The payment can be resumed upon return. A more stringent rule applies to absences between 90 days and 12 months, where the benefit is obligatorily suspended. Reinstatement is only possible if the travel was for specific approved reasons such as training, international cooperation, or overseas job searching within recognized programs. Finally, any absence exceeding 12 months results in the permanent loss of unemployment benefits, as the individual is no longer considered a resident in Spain. The lawyer strongly advised beneficiaries to always inform SEPE before traveling to prevent potential demands for repayment of benefits received during non-compliant periods.
