Massive Sinkhole Opens in Toulouse Garden, Linked to Metro Construction
A large sinkhole, estimated at 48 cubic meters, appeared in a private garden in the Bonnefoy district of Toulouse, France, on June 1st, 2025. The incident is believed to be related to the ongoing construction of the city's metro line C. "The tunnel boring machine passed 50 meters below the surface just a week ago," explained a spokesperson for Tisséo, the city's transport network. The homeowner, who was not living at the property at the time, discovered the hole and immediately contacted Tisséo. The sinkhole, over 5 meters deep, was quickly filled with over 60 cubic meters of cement. Tisséo has apologized for the incident and assured residents that additional safety measures are in place. This incident follows a similar event in April, where three houses in the same district were damaged after the passage of the tunnel boring machine. Tisséo has acknowledged the ground subsidence and is taking steps to repair the damages and prevent future incidents.
