Generations of Craftsmanship: Inside Seville's Renowned Hermanos Caballero Woodcarving Workshop

Seville, Spain – The esteemed workshop of Hermanos Caballero, a family business with a four-generation legacy in religious woodcarving, recently opened its doors to content creator Alberto Maldonado, offering a rare glimpse into their intricate craft. Manuel Caballero, one of the managing brothers, detailed the family's deep roots, tracing their ancestry back to Maese Farfán, who crafted the 'paso del Calvario,' and his cousin López Farfán, the musician. The tour showcased various stages of creating 'pasos' (processional floats) for Holy Week brotherhoods. Maldonado observed the meticulous process, from initial hand-drawn designs for pieces like the 'Parque Alcosa' and 'Pino Montano' floats, to the detailed carving of 'respiraderos' (side panels) for the Virgen del Rosario de Bormujos. Manuel Caballero explained that the carving begins with a smooth wooden board, on which designs are drawn freehand, followed by the creation of 'calados' and 'bajos relieves' to add depth and volume. Among the projects highlighted were the 'doser' of Santa Marta, expected to be blessed in December, and the final 'cartela' for the Hermandad del Baratillo. The workshop also displayed models and clay sketches by José Manuel Bonilla for the Hermandad de la Misión. Future projects include a 'paso' for the Resucitado de Ceuta, new 'andas' for the Hermandad del Baratillo, and the 'respiraderos' for the Beso de Judas de Sevilla. The video also featured the preparation of wood, distinguishing between pine for 'parihuelas' (bearers' frames) and cedar for carving, and the creation of 24 Salomonic columns for a 'canastilla' (upper part of the float). The craftsmen demonstrated the precision involved in cutting and shaping wood, emphasizing the blend of traditional techniques and artistic vision that defines their work. The visit concluded with a note of gratitude from Maldonado for the workshop's generosity.
