New Safety Rules for Peruvian Motorcyclists: Helmets and Vests Now Mandatory
New Helmet and Vest Law for Peruvian Motorcyclists: A 90-Day Trial Begins Lima, Peru – A new law requiring motorcyclists in Lima and Callao to wear safety vests displaying their license plate number and certified helmets went into effect on Thursday, May 22, 2025. The Ministry of Transport and Communications implemented the measure to improve road safety. The video from La República shows various motorcyclists complying with the new regulations, illustrating the types of helmets and vests deemed acceptable. "The aim is to reduce traffic accidents and strengthen citizen security," stated a spokesperson from the Ministry. The law specifies that helmets must have a clear visor, functional retention system, and appropriate size, with visible labels certifying their homologation. Vests must have retroreflective bands of silver-grey or white, at least 5 centimeters wide, in a pattern including a horizontal stripe at the front and back, and two vertical stripes from the shoulders. Non-compliance results in a fine of 428 soles, equivalent to 8.8% of a Taxing Unit (UIT). The measure will be evaluated over a 90-day trial period, assessing its impact on accident reduction.
