Former Nursery Teacher Reveals Harsh Realities of Childcare in Poland

WARSAW, Poland – A former nursery teacher, Ania Laskowska-Peters, has shed light on the often-unseen challenges faced by childcare professionals in Poland. In a recent video, Laskowska-Peters, who worked in a bilingual nursery for nearly a year, detailed the demanding conditions that led to her departure from the profession. Laskowska-Peters described how nurseries, aiming to maximize enrollment, often operate with high child-to-staff ratios. "When I started, we had five children, which was great," she stated. "But by the time I left, there were 25 children in the group." She highlighted that while official staffing might suggest three teachers per group, it was common for one to be absent due to illness, leaving only two staff members to manage a large number of infants and toddlers. According to Laskowska-Peters, this understaffing makes individualized care virtually impossible. "It's not possible to approach each child individually, even if you really want to," she explained, citing the continuous need to change diapers, feed, and engage with children. She also revealed the constant exposure to germs, leading to frequent illnesses among staff. "I experienced two anginas and rotavirus within a year, not to mention countless common colds," she shared, expressing frustration over the pressure to work while sick. Laskowska-Peters also recounted an instance where she was required to appear at a different nursery branch for short periods in the morning and evening to give parents the impression that an English-speaking teacher was present, despite the actual teacher being absent for two months. She concluded by urging parents to understand the immense physical and emotional toll on nursery staff, emphasizing that the expectations often portrayed on social media are far from the reality.
