LA County Fair Celebrates Decades of Tablescaping Excellence

LA County Fair's Tablescaping Competition: A Blend of Creativity and Community POMONA, CA – The annual LA County Fair continues its long-standing tradition of tablescaping, a unique competition where participants transform blank tables into elaborate themed displays. The event, which dates back to the 1930s, draws a dedicated community of exhibitors who showcase their creativity through intricate table settings, complete with custom menus and thematic decor. Tom, a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, visited the competition to learn more. "When I think of the L.A. County Fair, I think of tablescaping," he stated, highlighting the competition's enduring presence at the fair. He explained that entrants are tasked with setting a table, including a menu, based on a chosen theme. Chris Stoner, the Competitions Coordinator for the LA County Fair, emphasized the event's popularity and competitive nature. "This is a hot competition we have every year. We always have a waiting list," Stoner remarked. She detailed the three main classes participants can enter: an "any design" table, a "holiday" theme, and the fair's specific theme, "Stars, Stripes, and Fun." Stoner noted the "any design" category is particularly popular, allowing for diverse interpretations from murder mystery dinners to peacock-inspired settings. The most sought-after accolade is the "Best of Division" award, which includes a prestigious ribbon and a $200 prize. "That is the creme of the creme, the top of the top. Everybody strives to be the best of division," Stoner explained. Beyond the competition, Stoner highlighted the strong sense of community among participants. "It also builds a community because I have a lot of exhibitors that come every year. They say, 'Hi, how have you been? It's good to see you.' They go around, they look at each other's tables. They're very complimentary of each other," she observed. Despite its competitive nature, the tablescaping event fosters a friendly and supportive environment, celebrating artistic expression and shared passion.
