Historic Los Feliz Fountain to be Restored by 2028
Los Feliz Fountain's Grand Restoration: A 2028 Target The iconic William Mulholland Memorial Fountain in Los Feliz, a beloved landmark, has been closed since 2021 following a flood that severely damaged its pump room. Now, a major restoration project is underway, promising to return the fountain to its former glory. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is undertaking the ambitious task of replacing all the fountain's components, a process made more complex by the need to maintain the fountain's historic integrity. "The replacement parts we needed were from the 1940s," explained Helen Olivares of LADWP, highlighting the challenge of sourcing and replicating these rare components. The project also involves upgrading the electrical components, moving them above ground to prevent future water damage. Beyond the mechanical work, the restoration will also include replacing the walkway, benches, and landscaping, ensuring the area's overall aesthetic appeal. The city declared the fountain a historical monument in 1976, thus necessitating a rigorous approval process for any changes. The LADWP hopes to break ground on construction in 2026 and complete the project in 2028, aiming for a reopening before the 2028 Olympic Games. This restoration project is not merely about repairing a fountain; it's about preserving a piece of Los Angeles history for future generations.
