Award-Winning Mexico Museum Shuts Down Due to Security Lapse
Mexico City's National Museum of Anthropology, winner of the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award, faced an unexpected closure on June 2nd, 2025, due to a change in security contractors. The abrupt transition left the museum without sufficient security personnel, forcing its temporary closure, much to the disappointment of numerous visitors, including a tourist from Peru who had traveled thousands of miles for a visit. Students with school assignments were also affected. The incident sparked an immediate public outcry and prompted an official apology from Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico. Secretary of Culture, Claudia Curiel, stated that instructions have been given to ensure the museum's reopening as quickly as possible. The incident highlights concerns about the management of Mexico's cultural heritage and the need for effective security measures in such important institutions. The museum reopened on June 3rd, 2025.
