Sheinbaum: Organized Crime and Drug Trade Pervade Both Mexico and US
Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted the pervasive nature of organized crime, stating that it extends beyond Mexico's borders into the United States. During a recent public address, Sheinbaum emphasized that the issue of drug trafficking is a shared responsibility, pointing out that while drugs like methamphetamine and fentanyl are produced in Mexico and flow north, precursor chemicals sometimes travel from the US to Mexico. She asserted that the majority of the illicit profits from drug sales are generated within the United States. "Organized crime is not only present in Mexico, it is also in the United States," Sheinbaum stated, underscoring the interconnectedness of the drug trade. She questioned the narrative that places sole responsibility on Mexico, asking, "Who sells these drugs in the United States? Who sells them?" She further elaborated that the illegal sale of drugs primarily generates revenue within the US, suggesting a shared challenge in combating transnational criminal organizations.
