The Heroic Chonino: How a Police Dog's Sacrifice Gave Argentina National Dog Day
Argentina Honors Chonino: The Brave Police Dog Whose Sacrifice Gave Birth to National Dog Day On June 2nd, Argentina celebrates National Dog Day, a poignant tribute to Chonino, a German Shepherd who served in the Federal Police. This day commemorates Chonino's ultimate act of bravery and loyalty in 1983. While on patrol in Villa Devoto with his handler, Suboficial Luis Sibert, Chonino faced armed criminals. During a shootout, both officers were wounded. Despite his own grievous injuries, Chonino mustered his remaining strength to drag himself to his fallen handler, ultimately dying at his side. 'It was an incredible display of courage and devotion,' recalls a retired police officer who worked with Chonino. This heroic act moved the nation, and in 1996, June 2nd was officially declared National Dog Day in Argentina. Today, Chonino's legacy lives on, reminding us of the unwavering loyalty and selflessness of our canine companions.
