EU Divided on Further Military Aid to Ukraine: Italy and Spain Hesitate
The European Union is facing a growing division over its support for Ukraine. Italy and Spain have expressed reluctance to contribute to a new €40 billion military aid package, creating a significant rift among member states. This hesitation stems from concerns about national defense budgets and differing priorities. Italy's foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, emphasized the need for Rome to consider its own defense spending. Spain, while having previously pledged €1 billion this year, has yet to make a decision on the new package. This contrasts sharply with the Baltic states, which have already committed over 2% of their GDP to Ukraine's defense. The division highlights the complex geopolitical landscape and the challenges the EU faces in maintaining a united front on supporting Ukraine.
