Hungarian Woman Embraces Traditional Folk Attire for Everyday Life

Salgótarján, Hungary – Réka, a resident of Salgótarján, has embraced a unique lifestyle choice by consistently wearing traditional Nógrád folk costumes in her daily life. For the past four years, Réka has foregone modern clothing, opting for the comfort and practicality of traditional attire, which she believes surpasses contemporary fashion. "Pants, I haven't worn them in 15 years," Réka stated in an interview. She added, "I realized that folk costume doesn't need to be fussed with, and I don't need to adjust myself to it; it changes as I want it to. It's really much, much more practical and comfortable, even for work." Réka is seen in the video performing various tasks, from commuting on a bus to tending to animals on her farm, all while dressed in her traditional garments. Alongside her husband, Zoli, Réka maintains a farm in Salgótarján, raising animals. They believe that by engaging in activities similar to their ancestors, they should also dress in a similar fashion. Réka's distinctive appearance often draws attention and questions from the public. "When people see me in folk costume, everyone is amazed, saying, 'Wow, how beautiful, how special,'" Réka shared. "Everyone asks what kind of performance we're going to, what program will be in the afternoon, or if there will be a dance house tonight." Despite the curiosity, Réka feels comfortable and authentic in her chosen attire. "I want to preserve the old traditions and some pieces of the past," she concluded, highlighting her commitment to cultural heritage.
