Kenyan Opposition Accuses Safaricom of Aiding Government in Surveilling Critics
Kenyan Opposition Figures Accuse Safaricom of Collaboration in Surveilling Critics Nairobi, Kenya – On May 27, 2025, at Karen Hospital in Nairobi, prominent Kenyan opposition figures Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa leveled serious accusations against Safaricom, a leading telecommunications company. They claimed Safaricom collaborated with the Ruto administration in surveilling, tracking, and abducting critics of the regime. The press conference took place outside Karen Hospital where MP Koimburi was admitted. "We call out telecommunication companies, in particular Safaricom, which may have turned a blind eye, or worse, actively collaborated with the regime in surveilling, tracing, aiding, and abducting of these citizens," stated Musyoka during the press conference. Wamalwa added, "We demand that they publicly account for the data they provide to security agencies and affirm their commitment to protecting the rights and privacy of their customers." The opposition figures also put on notice all political and business elites who remained silent on the matter. The allegations raise serious concerns about privacy violations and potential abuse of power. Safaricom has yet to issue an official response to these accusations. The incident highlights the ongoing political tensions in Kenya and the scrutiny faced by major corporations operating within the country's complex political landscape. Further investigation is needed to determine the validity of these claims and their potential implications.
