Teacher's Perspective: The Debate Over Mobile Phone Bans in Schools MINSK – A recent video by former teacher LiketheSun has ignited a lively discussion on the controversial ban of mobile phones in schools, effective September 1st. The educator, who states she can now freely express her views having left the school system, voiced strong support for the new policy, particularly for older students. "I am more than in agreement with this, I more than support it," she stated, recalling her own experiences in the classroom. She recounted how, despite her best efforts to make lessons engaging, many older students remained fixated on their phones. "It was just some kind of clownery; they look at you as an entertainment object," she explained, describing the constant distraction caused by phones and notifications during lessons. "It just irritates you to no end. I used to have panic attacks after lessons." The video has drawn a diverse range of opinions from parents and former teachers. One parent commented, "The problem is that if a child doesn't want to learn, they won't do it even without a phone." This sentiment was echoed by another user who stated, "You'd think when there were no phones, everyone studied perfectly and got red diplomas." However, many supported the ban. A former educator with 19 years of experience shared, "I agree, I worked in education for 19 years, and now, living in Norway, I see how great it is when children in school here are without phones. Children play and walk outside in active games, communicate with each other, are involved in the educational and interesting process in class! Therefore, I am only for the phone ban!" Concerns about emergencies were also raised. One parent highlighted, "I see a problem in this; my child has a disability group 2 and consequences of diabetes. Who will answer for her if she can't call me?" Another comment noted, "If a child goes home without a phone and is kidnapped by a maniac, they can't call anyone." LiketheSun addressed these concerns, suggesting that in emergencies, parents could contact the school administration, and the director would promptly inform the child. The debate continues to highlight the complex challenges of integrating technology into education while ensuring student well-being and academic focus.
