CHICAGO – Zari, an African lion at Lincoln Park Zoo, is expecting cubs soon, as confirmed by recent prenatal ultrasounds. The zoo's veterinary team has been conducting weekly ultrasounds on Zari, who voluntarily participates in her prenatal care. This cooperative approach allows veterinarians to monitor her pregnancy without the need for sedation. During a recent session, Dr. Kathryn Gamble, DVM, MS, Dipl ACZM, Dip EZCM (ZHM), a veterinarian at Lincoln Park Zoo, pointed out key features on the ultrasound monitor. "Here we can see the spine and the rib cage shadows of the cub," Dr. Gamble explained, indicating the developing fetus. She further highlighted a "fluttering heartbeat of one of the babies," confirming that at least two cubs are expected. This diligent prenatal care is part of Lincoln Park Zoo's broader commitment to wildlife conservation and ensuring the health and well-being of its animal residents. The upcoming birth of the lion cubs is highly anticipated by the zoo staff and the public alike.
